The redevelopment of the Kensington site is the first major project to revitalise a large inner-city high-rise public housing estate.
The Kensington Housing Estate Redevelopment Project was launched by the Minister for Housing and Aged Care, Minister Bronwyn Pike, in August 2002. The project was designed to redevelop the six and a half hectare Holland Park public housing estate of 850 public housing dwellings.
The redevelopment involved the demolition of all buildings on the site, with the exception of two high-rise buildings, and the construction of new residences for private purchase and new public housing apartments.
At the same time, the Office of Housing undertook major upgrading works on the two remaining high-rise buildings on the site.
On completion, the redevelopment will consist of 50% private apartments and 50% public housing apartments.
